Are you a Mexican national, or temporary or permanent resident in Mexico? If so, you may be entitled to get a Mexican driver’s licence. In this article, we outline the general requirements in Playa del Carmen to get a Mexican driver’s licence for the first time. Therefore, do check with your local licensing agency for precise information for your area.

Requirements to Get a Mexican Driver’s Licence

Visit your local driver licensing agency office with the following documentation.

  1. Permanent or Temporary Resident Card
  2. Valid Passport
  3. CURP: This is printed on most recently issued residency cards. However, you will be required to produce a printed paper copy from the government website.
  4. Proof of Address: A recent water or electricity bill – no more than 90 days old. The bill can be in someone else’s name, but it should contain your address.
  5. Driving Licence: A current driving licence from your home country or a certificate from an accredited establishment or instructor recognized by the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO).
  6. Eyesight Test: Results issued by an accredited practitioner or establishment facility recognized by the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo
  7. Medical and toxicology certificates: Issued by an accredited practitioner or establishment facility recognized by the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo
  8. (Solicitud) Application Form: Forms can be downloaded from this link, printed and signed.
  9. Payment: Pay the fees at the licensing office, as below. Note that if your temporary residency expires in under 2 years, you will be offered a shorter term provisional licence. You may reapply for a long-term licence once your residency is renewed and according to its expiry.

  • 2 years: $1,324 MXN
  • 3 years: $1,635 MXN
  • 4 years: $1,853 MXN
  • 5 years: $2,113 MXN

Foreigners on a tourist visa or residents with less than two remaining years of residency can obtain a temporary driver’s licence. These are valid for 30, 60, 90, or 120 days. Whereas tourists can legally drive in Mexico with a valid foreign driver’s licence for the duration of their stay.

At the licensing office you will be required to take a short written competency test. Following this, submit the confirmation with your other documentation.

Then receive your Mexican driver’s licence upon approval of your documents, having your photograph taken, and payment. Depending on queues, expect to spend more than one hour at the office.
