「 satyr 」 萨堤尔，是希腊神话里半人半兽的森林之神，有山羊的特征，例如山羊的尾巴和耳朵。

能称之为艺术的作品。

「 for the rest 」 除此之外。 「 scoff at 」 嘲笑，讥讽。 「 mastiff 」 獒犬， -in-waiting 这个词缀有一

个意义是 ，所以这里的 mastiff-in-waiting

可以理解为忠诚的看门獒犬。

这一句话概括了 Behrman“ 矛盾 ” 的性格，一方面，他极端瞧不起别人展现出来的柔情，另一方面，

1. Behrman, in his old blue shirt, took his seat as the hermit-miner on an upturned kettle for a

rock.

1. The lonesomest thing in all the world is a soul when it is making ready to go on its

mysterious, far journey. The fancy seemed to possess her more strongly as (one by one)the

ties / that bound her to friendship and to earth / were loosed.

这两段是 Behrman 喝酒之后说的话，口齿不清还带着口音，现在把这两段话写成标准英语就好理解

啦 : “Are there people in the world with the foolishness to die because leafs drop off from a

confounded vine? I have not heard of such a thing. No, I will not pose as a model for you fool

从这两段也可以看出 Behrman 其实还是一位刀子嘴豆腐心的老头。

「 upturned 」 翻转的。

Behrman 来给 Sue 当模特，是一位隐居的采矿者形象，但是 Sue 工作室条件简陋，没有石头布景，

就让 Behrman 坐在倒扣着的水壶上，充当岩石。

「 One by one 」 是个插入语，如果放到分句最后会好理解一点。 as the ties / that bound her to

friendship and to earth / were loosed one by one.

藤叶支撑着 Johnsy 打败病魔， Behrman 牺牲自己换取了 Johnsy 好好活着， Johnsy 和 Sue 也定会带着

Behrman 那份艺术梦想继续求索、追逐。

今天给大家带来的是一部由女神 —— 费雯丽，主演的一部非常经典的电影：《魂断蓝桥》（ Waterloo

Bridge）

这句话颇有意蕴，描写了人之将死时的状态，通过这一句话，我们或许能理解此时 Johnsy 的状况。

一个准备走上神秘遥远的死亡道路的心灵，是全世界最寂寞、最悲哀的了。当她与尘世及友情之间

的联系一点点地脱离时，那个玄想似乎更有力地掌控了她。 「 the fancy 」 在这指的就是死亡。

「 port 」 波尔图葡萄酒。过去波特酒被用作一种治疗剂，所以这里 Johnsy 想让 Sue 给她端一碗浓汤

（ broth ）和一杯加葡萄酒的牛奶。不过现在有研究表明，葡萄酒与牛奶绝对不能一起喝，同一时

间接着喝，无论酒精含量的多少，都绝对不能！酒精会让蛋白质变性，影响牛奶的营养价值。（不

过这也可以看出外国人对酒的爱 ~ 不管什么都要加点酒。）

「 even 」 （成败机会）各半的，对半的。之前医生对 Sue 说 Johnsy 病得太重，治愈的几率只有 1/10

了，但如果心态好能提高到 1/5 ，而现在多亏了那一片仍然坚挺着的常春藤叶， Johnsy 生存的几率

更大了，有 1/2 了。

医生说他要去楼下查看另一位病人 ——Behrman ，他的这句话也是埋了线索。

剧情介绍：

第一次世界大战期间，回国度假的陆军中尉罗伊（罗伯特 · 泰勒）在滑铁卢桥上邂逅了舞蹈演员玛

拉（费雯 · 丽），两人彼此倾心，爱情迅速升温。就在两人决定结婚之时，罗伊应招回营地，两人被迫

分离。由于错过剧团演出，玛拉被开除，只能和好友相依为命。

不久玛拉得知罗伊阵亡的消息，几欲崩溃，备受打击。失去爱情的玛拉感到一切都失去了意义，
