詹姆斯 · 阿博特 · 麦克尼尔 · 惠斯勒 (James Abbott McNeill Whistler) （ 1834—1903 ），美国画家和蚀刻画

家，长期定居英国。作品有铜版画《法国组画》、肖像画《母亲的画像》及组画《泰晤士河》等。

下面给大家看看他最著名的的代表作《母亲的画像》。

1. William Morris

威廉 · 莫利斯（ 1834—1896 ），英国诗人和艺术家。英国艺术与工艺美术运动的领导人之一。世界知名

的家具、壁纸花样和布料花纹的设计者兼画家。主要作品：《杰森的生与死》、《世俗的天堂》

（ 1868-70 ）（一系列讲述希腊和中世纪故事的诗歌）、《世界尽头的井》、《奇迹岛的水》等。

1. delft 台夫特陶器

今天阅读中提到的壁炉 (chimneypiece) 上的陶器 delft 又称代尔夫特蓝陶（荷兰语： Delfts blauw ，英

语： Delft Blue ）、代尔夫特蓝瓷，一种陶器。最早出产于荷兰南荷兰省代尔夫特，在 16 世纪后开始制

造，因受中国青花瓷影响，颜色以青白花为主。

1. Mudie’s Library

Mudie 是查尔 · 斯爱德华 · 穆迪 (Charles Edward Mudie) ，他创立了 Mudie’s Lending Library( 穆迪借阅图

书馆 ) 和 Mudie’s Subscription Library( 穆迪订阅图书馆 ) 。

由于维多利亚时代的小说成本是大多数中产阶级的英国人不能私下购买小说的，所以像 “Mudie’s” 这样

的流行借阅图书馆对公众以及作者和出版者都有很大的影响力，这也成为农村地区借阅和购买书籍的

好方法。

• Looking back, I think that Mrs. Strickland was the most harmless of all the lion-

hunters that pursue their quarry from the rarefied heights of Hampstead to the nethermost

studios of Cheyne Walk.

「 Looking back 」 这不是看后面的意思哦，而是 “ 回顾、现在想来 ” 的意思。

「 harmless 」 字面意思是 “ 无害的 ” ，在这里理解为 “ 我 ” 认为 Mrs. Strickland 是最单纯的，没有坏心

思的。

「 lion-hunters 」 因为前文 Miss Waterford 提到了 Mrs. Strickland 想同作家来往，昨天的阅读咱们也

了解了 lion 在文中就是指那些知识分子作家。这里 「 lion-hunters 」 即指那些想和作家有来往的人

们。后面的 「 quarry 」 （捕捉的对象）指代的也是作家们。

「 that 」 引导的句子是修饰 lion-hunters ，即那些为了结交到文人雅士的人，从 Hampstead 追到

Cheyne Walk 。

2.she invented a world of the imagination / in which she lived with a freedom / she never

acquired in the world of every day.

其中 rarefied heights是指玄妙的高度， nethermost studios按字面意思来讲就是最低档的工作

室。也就是作者认为文人们在 Hampstead 聚集的地方要远胜于 Cheyne Walk 。

「 in which 」 引导的句子是修饰前面的 world ，换言之即 she lived with a freedom in a world of the

「 With which 」 引导的句子修饰的是 rules，其中 「 played the game of life 」 字面意思是 “ 玩生命

「 in accordance with 」 : according to a rule, system etc 按照，依照。即指按照作家们的人生信

条 “ 游戏人生 ” 来规范行为。

的方式调整自己的生活。

「 I could go to 」 是修饰前面的 someone，那个人是一个我可以带着问题去找他 / 她的人。

「 certain 」 : You use certain to indicate that you are referring to one particular thing, person, or

group, although you are not saying exactly which it is. 某个，特定的。即指前面的 someone 。

「 of 」 表示的是所属关系，即指这个特定的人（指代 Mrs. Strickland ）具有什么样的特点。特点当

然就是 attentive ear & reasonable counsel.

整句大意：对我而言能到倾诉烦恼的人也是非常好的事情，（我知道）她会专神倾听 (attentive ear)

（给我一些）合乎情理的劝告 (reasonable counsel) 。

「 It 」 & 「 one 」 都指 sympathy。 「 ghoulish 」 是指 “ 毛骨悚然的 ” ，另外补充一下 ghoul是指 “ 以别

人的苦难为乐的人 ” 。 「 avidity 」 表示 “ 热情，亲和力 ” 。

「 with which 」 引导的句子是修饰 「 something ghoulish 」 。 pounce upon指 “ 抓住机会，猛扑上

去 ” ； 「 dexterity 」 表示 “ 技巧，智能 ” 即指同情这个技巧。这些人看到朋友有不幸就会利用 “ 那些毛

骨悚然的特质 ” 冲上去以施展自己的同情心。

「 forth 」 表示 “ 向外，产生 ” ；与 gush连用，表示喷涌而出。 「 with an abandon 」 表示 “ 放任，放

of gibe that such a confession could hardly have failed to elicit from Rose Waterford.

整句大意：同情体贴本是一种迷人的特质，但是却常常被那些知道 (be conscious of) 自己有这种本

领的人滥用了。因为在他们的热情中，会有一些令人毛骨悚然的东西，他们会抓住他们的朋友的不

幸就恶狠狠地扑到他们身上，把自己的全部才能施展出来。同情心像一口油井一样喷薄而出 (gush

forth) ；惯爱表达同情的人 (sympathetic) 让它纵情奔放 (with an abandon) ，反而使那些受难者非常

困窘。

很多时候我们都在歌颂同情心，有时候甚至把同情心等同于善良，但是毛姆却非常犀利地指出了同

情心被滥用根本不是善行，而是让人觉得可怕的行为。有同情心固然是好的，但也不能太泛滥啦 ~

「 domestic 」 在这里不是指 “ 国内 ” ，而是指 a domestic animal lives on a farm or in someone's

home 驯养的，家养的。

“ 牛奶很好吃，特别是加上几滴白兰地。但是母牛却巴不得赶快让它淌出去。肿胀的乳头是很不舒

服的。 ” 这句话并不难，但是很有意思。

Rose Waterford 知道我认为 Mrs. Strickland 很会安慰我给我有用的建议后，非常牙尖地说了这句

话，意思就是 Mrs. Strickland 也是闲着没事干就想跟作家来往成为朋友，而 “ 我 ” 还把这当做是一件

对自己很好的事情。这句话也能看出毛姆对人物性格的刻画看似轻描淡写实则是非常深刻的，他不

会用过多的描述性语言告诉你这个角色是什么样的，而是让读者直观感受了解这个人物的性格特

点。

「 fancy 」 在文中不是 “ 喜欢 ” 的意思哦，而是表示 to think or believe something without being

certain. 想，以为。 「 gibe 」 = 「 jibe 」 意思是 “ 嘲讽，挖苦 ” 。 “ 我 ” 认为 Mrs. Strickland 脸红是因为

害怕 “ 我 ” 说出什么嘲讽的话来。

「 confession 」 : a statement admitting sth. that you are ashamed or embarrassed about; the act

of making such a statement. ( 对使自己羞愧或尴尬的事的 ) 表白 , 承认。 Mrs. Strickland 坦白了自己

的丈夫是一个很无聊的人，这让她在 “ 我 ” 面前或多或少有些许尴尬。来颗栗子吧： I've a confession

to make—I lied about my age. 我有错要承认 —— 我谎报了年龄。

「 elicit 」 表示 “ （从某人处）套出（信息） ; 引起（某人的反应） ” 。这尴尬的坦白引起 Rose

Waterford 的反应当然就是少不了的挖苦啦 ~

整句大意：她笑了一下，掩饰着自己的羞涩。我想她可能担心我会说一句什么打趣的话，换了

Rose Waterford ，听见她这样坦白，肯定会挖苦讽刺几句的。
