• 背景知识 -

1.Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connait point. （法语）

法国思想家帕斯卡语。意思是 “ 感情自有其理，理性难以知晓 ” ，表达的意思就是说理智有时根本无法理

解感情当中的各种理由。

Strickland 全然不顾自己的妻子儿女，抛弃他们独自去巴黎画画，他对亲人朋友极其冷酷，却对艺术怀

着莫名其妙的、异常深刻的感情。艺术是永远的感性，帕斯卡的原话其实也是在强调与理性相对的感

性。而 Strickland 正是因为自己身上的这种天然的感性突然被唤醒，所以义无反顾地抛弃一切，去进行

艺术的创作。

「 make head or tail of 」 意思是 “ 了解，弄清楚 ”

「 bear 」 : to have or show a sign, mark, or particular appearance, especially when this shows

that something has happened or is true 带有（某种标记或外观特征） bore that deserted look 就是

指屋子里的凄凉的样子。

「 let 」 是指 “ 出租 ” ， which 指代的就是 deserted look 。

整句大意：这次她已经把客厅略微收拾了一下，家庭主妇的本能战胜了沮丧，这里不像出了事以后

整句大意：我猜想，她妹妹喜好结交文人艺术家的习惯，她从来就不赞成。她一说到 “ 文艺 ” 这个

词，就露出满脸鄙夷不屑的神情。

或许是因为很喜欢和文艺人交朋友，所以 Mrs. Strickland 才会说自己不可能不支持丈夫画画（如果

他真的有天赋的话），但她的官太太姐姐却是很看不起这些艺术家们呐。

「 A spot of 」 : a small amount of something 一点点某物。根据后面的 pale cheeks 我们可以推测

出 color 在这就是指脸红。

整句大意： Mrs. Strickland 苍白的面颊上突然泛起红晕。

同样是写脸红了，文人果然是文人啊！那同学们是怎么来表达的呢 ~

「 bet your boots 」 意思是 “ 必然；确信 ” 。在句中可以引申为 “ 我敢跟你打赌，我能 ......”

「 routed her out 」 这是一个狩猎的术语，狗去找躲在灌木丛中的兔子，让它害怕奔跑，这样猎人

就能看到。所以这里就是指找出那个勾引 Strickland 的女人。

“ 我敢和你们打赌，我一定能马上就把那个女人搜寻出来。 ”

「 doggo 」 常和 「 lie 」 连用，表示隐蔽地；隐伏着。

「 her sex 」 即指女性。 「 that 」 引导的句子是前面 opinion 的具体内容， 「 attached to 」 表示 “ 非常

喜欢，热爱的 ......” 即女性共有的观念是：男人都是些（想离开爱他的女人的）没心肝的家伙

(brute) 。

「 does 」 是指男性抛弃了那个爱他的女人， 「 much to blame 」 是指受到更多的责备。

整句大意：麦克安德鲁太太和大多数女性的见解相同，认为男人们都是一些没有心肝的家伙，总想

离开爱着他们的女人，但是一旦他真的做出这种事来，更多的过错是在女人这一方面。

刚刚上校太太也说了一定是自己的妹妹在和丈夫相处时不够聪明，才会落得今天这个样子。所以女

性总是受到了更多的责备，这些责备甚至也是来自于女性，来自于亲人。可见当时的女性确实受到

了很多不平等对待。

「 the word 」 即指 “subtle” 玄妙的；微妙的。即他全部蔑视都用 “ 玄虚 ” 这个词表现出来。

「 alien 」 : very different from what you are used to, especially in a way that is difficult to

understand or accept 陌生的。 calling: someone's profession or trade 职业；行业。上校说

Strickland 的这种品性 (quality) 是和他的职业传统完全不同并且难以接受的。

「 none the worse 」 表示 “ 没有什么坏处 ” ， fling 可以表示 “ 短暂的风流韵事，一阵的尽情享乐 ” 。上

校的意思是让 Strickland 出去混段时间也没啥坏处。

1. “You think you’re a match for the one, but against the other you’re helpless?” ... Perhaps I

had struck home.

1. Do you know, I’ve been comforting myself by thinking that however long it lasted he’d

want me at the end. I knew when he was dying he’d send for me, and I was ready to go...

1. I have always been a little disconcerted by the passion women have for behaving

beautifully at the death-bed of those they love. Sometimes it seems as if they grudge the

longevity which postpones their chance of an effective scene.

「 match 」 : someone who is much stronger, cleverer etc than their opponents 强大的敌手，优势

的对手。

「 the one 」 即指（假想中把丈夫勾引跑的）女人； the other 指 an idea 就是画画这个理想。

「 strike home 」 : （言语等）正中要害，使人豁然省悟。我的话正中 Mrs. Strickland 的要害。

整句大意： “ 你认为你是前者的对手，可是同后者较量起来，就无能为力了，是不是这样？ ” 也许我

的话说中了她的要害。

Mrs. Strickland 发疯一般不肯原谅丈夫，是因为她认为如果是其他女人勾引跑了丈夫，那么这是因

为男人天性如此；但现实却是丈夫是因为画画而抛弃自己，那就证明了自己对丈夫而言毫无价值，

根本不可能再 “ 抢回 ” 自己的丈夫了。多么可悲的女人。（这里为什么 Mrs.Strickland 突然转变态度，

「 comforting myself 」 即 “ 自我安慰 ” ； 「 however 」 这里不是 “ 然而 ” 的意思，而是相当于 no

matter how 的意思， however long it lasted 即不管持续多久。

「 send for 」 : to ask or tell someone to come to you by sending them a message 派人去叫（请）

这也是一种比较老式的用法啦 ~

整句大意：你知道，我一直宽慰自己说，不管这件事继续多久，最终他还是要我的。我想在他临终

的时候他会叫我去，我也准备去。

「 disconcert 」 意思是 “ 使尴尬，使困惑 ” ，这里的意思就是说 “ 我 ” 一听到女人说这些话就觉得满屏

尴尬，言外之意就是我很反感这些话。

「 behaving beautifully 」 在句中就是指女人在爱人临终前表现出的宽宏大量（你做的对不起我的

事情，我都不计较了）， 「 death-bed 」 是临终床。

「 grudge 」 : to think that sb. does not deserve to have sth. 认为 ...... 不应得到； 「 longevity 」 :

long life or the long time that something lasts 长寿；持久。女人表现的宽宏大量让 “ 我 ” 觉得她是认

为男人不该长寿。 「 which 」 引导的句子修饰 longevity ，即这种长寿就延迟了女人们的 “ 原谅他 ” 大

戏。

整句大意：女人们总是喜欢在她们所爱的人临终前表现得宽宏大量，她们的这种偏好叫我实在难以

忍受。有时候我甚至觉得她们不愿意男人寿命太长，就是怕把演出这幕好戏的机会拖得太晚。

毛姆这里也是犀利的很呀，对于女人在爱人临终前表现的善解人意宽宏大量是一顿挖苦讽刺，但是

并不是所有的人都在表演这一切，只不过毛姆就遇到了那些不够走心的女人了 ~

「 to be more of a piece 」 : the same all the way through 指 “ 一个样子 ” ，这里的一个样子是指人从

小就有的那种单纯，认为人性应该是单纯如一的。

「 so charming a creature 」 即指 Mrs. Strickland ，她之前在 “ 我 ” 心中是一个温柔善良的女子，现

在居然表现地报复心 (vindictiveness ) 如此之强。

「 motley 」 指 “ 形形色色的，混杂的 ” ，我当时还并不知道人性是极其复杂的。

「 side by side 」 : next to each other 并排地，肩并肩地。那些好的坏的特质都并排在人们的心

中。

整句大意：当时我还同今天不一样，总认为人的性格是单纯如一的；当我发现这样一个温柔可爱的

女性报复心居然这么重的时候，我感到很沮丧。那时我还没认识到一个人的性格是极其复杂的。今

天我已经认识到这一点了：卑鄙与伟大 (pettiness and grandeur) 、恶毒与善良 (malice and

charity) 、仇恨与热爱 (hatred and love) 是可以互不排斥地并存在同一颗心里的。

这里毛姆又将主题深化到人性感情问题上了。人性中有很多情感，好的坏的都有，通过对

Strickland 夫妇的描写，特别是最后一句话的总结，完美揭示了人性的复杂。
