法语 意为 “ 我可怜的爱人。 ”

1. Corot （柯罗）

在提到 Strickland 的画并不被大家看好的时候， Dirk 说马奈也曾被嘲笑过，柯罗的画也曾卖不出去，看

来是很看好 Strickland 哦 ~ 之前我们已经了解过马奈了，今天就来简单了解一下柯罗吧。

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot （ 1796~1875 ）从 26 岁开始才正式从事绘画，是法国写实主义风景画和肖

像画家。出生于巴黎，早年师从古典派画家贝尔坦，因学业的优秀而获奖金，到罗马留学，在那里住

了七八年。回国后在巴比松村附近的枫丹白露森林画了很多风景。

pantaloon意思是 “ 老旦，老丑角，傻老头 ” ，这里 「 Poor pantaloon 」 就是指可怜的傻瓜。

「 an object to excite love 」 : 指能激发（他人）爱意的人。在 “ 我 ” 眼里 Dirk Stroeve 就不是这种人

affectionate: showing in a gentle way that you love someone and care about them 表示爱的；深

情的。 “ 我 ” 不知道 Dirk Stroeve 的太太是否真的爱他，但我在她眼里看到了带着深情的笑容。

reserve这里的意思是 “ 缄默 ” 。她的缄默或许藏着她深厚的感情。

ravishing: 是指非常美丽的，勾魂的。 「 love-sick 」 是指害相思病的，单相思。 Dirk Stroeve 的太

太并非是他幻想看到的，苦苦相思的美到勾魂的大美女。

grave原意是严肃的，这里用来修饰人即指 “ 端庄的 ” ； comeliness是指（女性的）秀丽，标志；

「 grave comeliness 」 就是指女性端庄标志的气质。

整句大意：这个可怜的傻瓜，他不是一个能引起女人爱情的人物。但 Mrs. Stroeve 眼睛里的笑容是

含着爱意的，在她的缄默后面也可能隐藏着深挚的感情。她并不是他那苦苦相思，无限幻想中的美

女，但是却另有一种端庄秀丽的气质。

「 remind sb. of sth. 」 使某人想起 ...... Mrs. Stroeve 让 “ 我 ” 想起了 Chardin 画中美丽的妇人。

「 mob-cap 」 的 18 、 19 世纪女性带的头巾式的帽子。

immortalize（尤指通过著书、画像等）使不朽，使名垂千古。这里是指画中妇女形象在 Chardin 的

画笔下已然不朽。

整句大意：她让我想起那个戴着头巾式女帽、系着围裙的可爱的主妇，这个形象在伟大画家笔下已

然不朽。

Dirk Stroeve 夸自己的太太想 Chardin 画中的人，还真不是随便说说的啊 ~ 那么 “ 我 ” 提到的画作中的

妇女到底是那幅画呢，老师觉得和《餐前祈祷》这幅画中的妇人形象很像诶 ~ 大家觉得呢？

rank in society she sprang, what had been her upbringing, or how she had lived before her

marriage.

1. It was all false, insincere, shoddy; and yet no one was more honest, sincere, and frank than

Dirk Stroeve.

Who could resolve the contradiction?

twenty francs.’ ” ... “I was so taken aback. I didn’t like to refuse. He put the money in his

pocket, just nodded, said ‘Thanks,’ and walked out.”

1. It was lamentable that one was more amused by the ridiculous figure cut by the

Dutchman than outraged by Strickland’s brutal treatment of him.

place: 在这作动词，意思是 “ 判断，评判 ” 。即 “ 我 ” 无法评判 / 看透 Mrs. Stroeve

sprang是 spring的过去式，意思是 “ 生长 ” 这里即指人的 “ 成长 ” ， 「 what rank in society she

sprang 」 所表达的意思是 “ 她出生于什么社会阶层 ” 。 upbringing是指 “ 教养，养育 ”「 what had

been her upbringing 」 意思是 “ 她的成长经历 / 她受过什么样的教育 ” 。

同样是英国人，但是 “ 我 ” 却实在看不透这位缄默到神秘的太太。

那些画都是虚假不真诚，毫无艺术价值的，但是又没有人能比他更真正，更真诚，更坦率。谁能解

释这种矛盾呢？

前面也提到了 Dirk Stroeve 在评价别人作品的时候十分准确，但是对自己那些品质拙劣的画作居然

感到很满意，这同样也是一个矛盾点。通过这些矛盾的描写，让 Dirk Stroeve 好笑又古怪的人设更

加明显了。

「 the lot 」 : the whole of an amount or number of things, people etc 全部，全数。看完了所有的画

Dirk 还期待着 Strickland 来点评价。 francs 即法郎

「 be taken aback 」 : to be very surprised about something 对 ...... 很吃惊。请他来看画结果开口就

是借钱，能不吃惊么 ~

大家应该还记得之前的阅读中也提到了 Dirk 情感丰富为人慷慨吧，所以他不想拒绝 Strickland 。想想

这个画面其实蛮有意思的，两个都是性格有些特别的人遇到一起，也不知道还有什么 interesting 的

故事 ~

1. “Why should you think that beauty, which is the most precious thing in the world, lies like a

stone on the beach for the careless passer-by to pick up idly? Beauty is something wonderful

and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul.”

1. “It is a melody that he sings to you, and to hear it again in your own heart /

you want knowledge and sensitiveness and imagination.”

每天都有就不叫彩蛋啦哈哈哈哈 ~

lamentable: 意思是 “ 令人嘘唏的；使人惋惜的 ” 。

「 the ridiculous figure cut by the Dutchman 」 : 其中 the Dutchman 即指 Dirk ， cut the ridiculous

figure 意思是 “ 给人以荒谬可笑的形象 ” ，补充一个词组： cut a figure 意思是 “ 引人注意，崭露头角 ” 也

可以指 “ 显得可笑 ” 。

outrage: to make someone feel very angry and shocked 激起（某人）的义愤。

整句大意：可悲的是，听了这个故事的人，更会被这位荷兰人滑稽的样子逗得发笑，而并不是因

Strickland 这种粗鲁行为感到愤怒。

可怜的 Dirk 被造物主塑造成了一个滑稽的角色，心疼三秒 ~

which即指 beauty ，美是这个世界上最珍贵的东西。

passer-by“ 行人，路人 ” 又见面咯，上次是复数形式还记得在哪里加 s 吗？

idly: without any particular reason, purpose or effort; doing nothing. 毫无目的地；漫不经心地。

fashion: 文中作动词，意思是 “ 塑造 ” ； torment 是指（精神或肉体上的）折磨。即美是艺术家们在灵

魂的折磨中从嘈杂的世界里创造出来的。

整句大意： “ 为什么你认为美，美是世界上最宝贵的财富，它会像沙滩上的石头一样，被一个漫不

经心的过路人随随便便就捡起来？美是一种美妙、奇异的东西，是艺术家们在灵魂的折磨中从混沌

的世界里创造出来的。 ”

he是指代艺术家，把美比作是艺术家唱的一支旋律。

want在这里不是 “ 想，想要的意思 ” ，而是指 used to say that you need something or to ask

someone firmly to do something for you 需要（某物）；要（某人做某事）

整句大意： “ 他唱给你的是一支的旋律，要是想在自己心里重新听一遍就必须有知识、有敏锐的感

觉 (sensitiveness) 和想象力。 ”

看来想要真正感受欣赏美也不是件容易的事情啊 ~
