• St. Galmier (Saint-Galmier)

Saint-Galmier 是法国中部卢瓦尔省的一个温泉镇，在罗马时代，温泉是众所周知的，但在 19 世纪欧洲

对热疗的兴趣普遍增长，其名声也因此而提高。当地盛产苏打水，也是巴多伊特矿泉水 (Badoit mineral

water) 的发源地。今天阅读中 “ 我 ” 把报纸靠着 “Bottle of St. Galmier” 应该就是指产自 St. Galmier 的矿泉

水或苏打水吧～

1. Cockney

伦敦东区人，以性格活泼、幽默著称。 cockney 传统上指在出生地能听到博钟（ Bow Bells ）钟声的人

—— 博钟位于伦敦金融城（ City of London ）圣玛丽 • 勒 • 博（ St. Mary-le-Bow ）教堂内。伦敦东区以前

是贫民窟，因此 cockney 常常也指伦敦的工人阶层，泛指带伦敦口音的人。 cockney 含轻蔑或戏谑意

味。 19 世纪英国诗人约翰 • 济慈（ John Keats ）和他的朋友利 • 亨特（ Leigh Hunt ）等就曾被轻蔑地称为

Cockney School （伦敦佬派）。

1.I was interested to learn that it was the same as that at which Strickland and I had drunk

absinthe when I had gone over to Paris to see him. The fact / that he had never changed /

suggested a sluggishness of habit / which seemed to me characteristic.

「 at which 」 后面的句子是指 “ 我 ” 被 Dirk Stroeve 带去的地方就是之前 “ 我 ” 和 Strickland 喝苦艾酒的地

整句大意：我觉得非常有趣，（因为）我发现这正是上次我来巴黎看 Strickland 时我们一起饮苦艾

酒的地方。他一点都没有变，这说明他习性不易改变，在我看来，这也正是（他的）一种个性。

1. He moved a piece and straightway became absorbed in the game. Poor Stroeve gave me a

troubled look, but I was not disconcerted by so little.

1. He gave me an extraordinary impression as he sat there, his attention riveted on his game—

an impression of great strength; and I could not understand why it was that his emaciation

somehow made it more striking.

1. “Not out of charity,” I answered coolly. “I don’t really care a twopenny damn if you starve or

not.”

His eyes lit up again. “Come on, then,” he said, getting up. “I’d like a decent meal.”

「 piece 」 : 这里不是常见的 “ 一片，一点 ” 的意思，而是指 a small object used in a game such as

chess （棋类游戏等中的）棋子。 「 absorb in 」 是指 “ 全神贯注于 ......”Strickland 走了一步棋马上就

专心下棋去了 ~

这里的 look 是指 a gaze or glance expressive of something 也就是我们中文里常说的眼神，眼神；

give sb. a look 意思是 “ 看了某人一眼 ” ， 「 gave me a troubled look 」 即 Stroeve 苦恼地看了我一

眼。 Strickland 的反应确实让 Dirk Stroeve 很尴尬 ~

「 little 」 在这里是指微不足道的，不重要的（事情）， “ 我 ” 才不会因为 Strickland 专心于棋局对我们

很冷淡这种微不足道的小事而感到尴尬。

整句大意：他走了一步棋，马上就全神贯注到棋局上。可怜的 Stroeve 苦恼地看了我一眼，但是我

却没有因为这种微不足道的小事儿感到尴尬。

「 rivet someone’s attention on sth. 」 : to keep someone's attention fixed (on something) 专注

于 ......Strickland 坐在那里专心下棋。

「 an impression of great strength 」 即在解释前面的 extraordinary impression 具体是一种什么样

的印象，就是好像（身体里蕴藏着）巨大的力量。

「 emaciation 」 意思是 “ 消瘦，憔悴 ” ， made it more striking 其中 it 是指给 “ 我 ” 的这种印象。

Strickland 的消瘦反而让这种奇特的印象更加显著了。

整句大意：他给我一种很奇特的印象，当他坐在那里专心下棋时 —— 仿佛他身体里蕴藏着一股无比

的力量。我不知道为什么，他的消瘦使这一点更加显著了。

「 not care a twopenny (damn 或 hang) 」 意思是 “ 毫不在乎 ” 。从前面的对话来看 Strickland 很是傲

娇要面子啊，而 “ 我 ” 知道他过得不好却还明知故问，表示自己完全不 care Strickland 饿不饿，请你

吃饭是我的事，饿不饿是你的事，好是傲娇的 ~ 这五年 “ 我 ” 确实是成长了啊！

「 decent meal 」 即指 “ 一顿像样的饭 ” 。 Strickland 最终还是跟 “ 我 ” 去吃饭了，看来是很久都没有好

好吃过饭了，毕竟还需要去找 Stroeve 借钱。

5.“What have you been up to since I saw you last?” he asked at length.

1. It was a record of hard work and of little adventure; of experiments in this direction and in

that; of the gradual acquisition of the knowledge of books and of men.

1. It was tantalizing to get no more than hints into a character that interested me so much. It

was like making one’s way through a mutilated manuscript.

这里毛姆通过一系列对话而不是直白的叙述来表现 “ 我 ” 这五年的变化，性格变得更加成熟，行事也

更加稳重。这种通过对话来凸显的变化让读者的感受更加直观，对人物的性格刻画也是更加巧妙。

「 What have you been up to 」 意思是 “ 你一直在忙些什么 ” ，类似的表达还有： What have you

been doing?

「 at length 」 在这句话中意思是 “ 最后，终于 ” 。

「 tantalizing 」 : making you feel a desire to have or do something 逗引人的，撩拨人的。举个例

子： The tantalizing smell of fried bacon. 诱人的煎熏猪肉的味道。 ( 好香 ~

「 no more than 」 在句中的意思是 “ 仅仅，只不过 ” ，仅仅只是得到一些线索只是吊足胃口了啊！这

里的线索即指 Strickland 表达能力不佳只是支离破碎地给我讲了一些他近年生活中的事情。

that 引导的句子是修饰前面的 character ，即我感兴趣的人。

「 mutilated 」 意思是 “ 残缺的，破坏的 ” ； 「 make one’s way through 」 是 “ 设法通过 ” 的意思，这

里表达的意思是指 “ 读一本残缺不全的手稿 ” 。

整句大意：对于我如此感兴趣的人来说，只能得到一些（关于他生活的）线索，真是吊足了胃口，

简直像读一部残缺不全的稿本。

好。这是 “sensual things” 对应的意思。

整句话要表达的含义就是他对感官上的快乐很敏感，但他对感官上的快乐又并不太感兴趣。（真是

一个古怪的人 ~ ）

「 grim humor 」 这里的 “ 冷酷的幽默 ” 即指 Strickland 的 “ 自我解嘲 ” 。

「 the right side of life 」 : 指的是前文提到的 “sensual things” ，尤其是巴黎以卖淫闻名的，所以这

里指 Strickland 会带他们看 “ 法律禁止的事情 ” 。

整句大意：他用自我解嘲的语气告诉我，有一段日子他曾经给那些想领略巴黎夜生活的伦敦人

(Cockneys) 当向导。
