今天的背景知识要给大家展示一个 “ 数学公式 ”O(∩_∩)O 哈哈 ~

华氏一百零四度是我们常说的多少摄氏度呢？

F=9/5×C+32(F 代表华氏 C 代表摄氏度 )

所以根据这个算式 104=9/5×c+32

c=40 （摄氏度）

高烧到 40 摄氏度的 Strickland 看来是病的不轻呐。

「 no more than 」 在这里的意思是 used to say that someone or something is not very great or

important 只不过；仅仅。 「 obscurity 」 在句中不是 “ 晦涩 ” 的意思，而是 the state of being dark 昏

暗，黑暗。 「 profound 」 在这里是表示昏暗的程度 “ 非常的黑 ” ， 「 a less profound obscurity 」

在这表达的意思是 “(faint glimmer) 比极其昏暗（的房间）稍微亮那么一点点 ” 。

「 can 」 这里作名词，意思是 “ 罐子 ” 。 「 within reach of 」 是指 “ 够得着 ” 。

整句大意：他的眼睛在一个大水罐上停留了一会儿；这只水罐放在他一伸手就够得到的地方。

「 meat juice 」 大家有没有很奇怪什么是 “ 肉汁 ” ？欧美国家做肉类料理时常常搭配肉汁，它是用肉

「 practical 」 这里是指（人）明智的，注重实效的；也就是夸赞 Stroeve 会办事。这里的 「 little 」

是指 Stroeve 的身材矮，大家还记得 Stroeve 的身材吗？（又矮又胖）

「 bread-and-milk 」 是指泡在煮沸牛奶中的碎面包，类似于我们把油条放进热豆浆里 ~ （立刻想念

豆浆油条啊。。。）

整句大意：除了我提议要他买的东西以外，他还买来了蜡烛、肉汁和一盏酒精灯 (spirit-lamp) 。他

是一个很会办事的家伙 (fellow) ，一分钟也没有耽搁，马上着手 (set about) 就煮了一杯牛奶，把面包

泡在里面。
