Faun （弗恩） & Marsyas （马西亚斯）

Faun （弗恩）是希腊神话里长着英俊小生的脸和身体，鹿的腿、耳朵和尾巴的农牧神，与之前我们了

解到的 satyr （那个具有人形却有山羊尖耳、腿和短角的森林之神、色情狂）相比， Faun 要温和可爱得

多，只是喜欢恶作剧，或制造噩梦。

Marsyas （马西亚斯）森林之神，希腊神话中长着羊角羊蹄的半人半兽神。马西亚斯的乐器是双管笛，

太阳神阿波罗的乐器是里拉琴，他们比赛演奏。因为两人的水平不相上下，于是阿波罗提出，他可以

将里拉琴倒过来演奏。但是双管笛无法倒过来演奏，所以马西亚斯输了。按照约定，阿波罗提出胜利

者的要求，马西亚斯被吊在松树上，活剥了皮。

Mallarmé & Gaboriau

Mallarmé （马拉美）是法国象征主义诗人和散文家。生于巴黎一个官员家庭。 1876 年作品《牧神的午

后》在法国诗坛引起轰动。此后，马拉美在家中举办的诗歌沙龙成为当时法国文化界最著名的沙龙，

一些著名的诗人、音乐家、画家都是这里的常客。因为沙龙在星期二举行，被称为 " 马拉美的星期二 " 。

与阿蒂尔 · 兰波、保尔 · 魏尔伦同为早期象征主义诗歌代表人物。

Gaboriau (Emile Gaboriau) 是法国作家，小说家，记者，现代侦探小说的先驱。 L'Affaire Lerouge

「 pull (sb.) through 」 : to stay alive after you have been very ill or badly injured, or to help

微不至的照顾， Strickland 才得以存活下来啊 ~

整句大意：有一段日子看上去他连几个钟头也活不过去了，我深信，他之所以能够活下来完全要归

功这位荷兰人的任劳任怨（的照顾）。

「 dexterous 」 : （身、手等）敏捷的，灵巧的，熟练的；句中指 Dirk Stroeve 手脚利索，把

Strickland 照顾的很舒服。

「 exercise 」在句中意思是 “ 运用，使用 ”Stroeve 用了巧妙的方法。

「 of which...capable 」是修饰 cunning ；而 a cunning 在这里是抽象名词具体化，表示 “ 巧妙的办

「 put out 」 : 激怒，恼怒。 Stroeve 从来不会因为 Strickland 的粗鲁而不高兴。「 sullen 」指愠怒

的、阴沉的，如果 Strickland 只是愠怒沉闷，他就假装表现出看不见的样子。

「 office 」 : A service or beneficial act done for another 为他人服务或有益的行为。在这句话中表达

的意思是 Blanche (Mrs. Stroeve) 坚持要分担（ share) 一些照顾 Strickland 时必需要做的事情。

Stroeve was, of course, delighted with her. He could not do enough to show his gratitude

for the whole-hearted devotion with which she had accepted the burden he laid on her.

With his untidy beard and long hair, his features, always a little larger than life, now

emphasized by illness, he had an extraordinary aspect; but it was so odd that it was not quite

ugly.

It was not exactly spirituality that was obvious, though the screen of the flesh seemed

almost transparent, because there was in his face an outrageous sensuality; but, though it

sounds nonsense, it seemed as though his sensuality were curiously spiritual.

这对夫妻还真是都有些奇怪呢，明明很讨厌 Strickland 的 Blanche 能让他进家门已经很不错了，又

为何做这些事情呢？后面还将发生什么故事呢 ~

「 delight with 」是指 “ 喜欢，中意 ” ， delighted with her 是指 Stroeve 很满意自己的太太。

「 show one’s gratitude for 」意思是 “ 表达某人对 ...... 的感谢 ” ；「 whole-hearted 」意为 “ 全心全意

的 ” ， Stroeve 难以表达对妻子全心全意的奉献的感激。

「 lay sth. on sb. 」 : to ask someone to do something, especially something that is difficult or

something they will not want to do 把 ...... 推给某人；就是指 Mrs. Stroeve 接受了丈夫推给她的负担 --

照顾 Strickland 。

整句大意： Stroeve 对她自然非常满意。她接受了他撂给她的负担，而且为之全心全意奉献，他无

论怎样做也无法表示对她的感激。

「 larger than life 」 : attracting attention because their appearance or behaviour is more

flamboyant thanthat of ordinary people （比多数人）更有趣更具吸引力的，与众不同的；他的五官

本来就有一点和大多数人不一样，现在他的生病让这种不同更加明显。

「 aspect 」 : the appearance of someone or something 外表，外观。生病的 Strickland 有着奇特的

外表。

整句大意：他的胡须凌乱，头发很长，他的五官本来就和大多数人不太一样，因为害过这场病，就

更加明显了；他的整个外表非常奇特，但是因为太古怪了，反而不显得那么丑陋。

「 It 」即指上文提到的 impression ， that was obvious 修饰 spirituality ，即显而易见的精神世界。

「 screen + of 」 : something tall and wide that hides a place or thing 掩蔽物，屏障；肉体（对精

神世界）的遮蔽几乎是透明的 (transparent) 。再来个例子吧： The house was hidden behind a

screen of bushes. 房子隐藏在一片灌木丛后面。

He seemed to partake of those obscure forces of nature / which the Greeks personified in

shapes part human and part beast, the satyr and the faun.

「 outrageous 」意为 “ 蛮横的 ” ；「 outrageous sensuality 」是指 “ 野蛮的肉欲 ” ；他脸上表现了野

蛮的肉欲。「 spiritual 」意为 relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; supernatural

与精神有关的或具有精神性质的；超自然的； his sensuality were curiously spiritual 即指他这种肉

欲又非常奇怪地是具有精神性的，超乎自然的。

整句大意：虽然肉体（对精神世界）的遮蔽几乎是透明的 (transparent) ，但是那印象倒并不是明显

说了这么多很复杂的话， “ 我 ” 还是觉得表达不出此时 Strickland 带给 “ 我 ” 的印象究竟是怎么样的，这

种印象里肉欲和精神世界混杂在一起，即便是口口声声说着一生太短无法同时兼顾画画和爱情的

Strickland ，也藏不住那肉欲。

「 partake of 」表示 “ 享有 …”, 这里是说： Strickland 看上去享有那些难以捉摸的自然之力。

「 which 」引导的从句是修饰「 forces of nature 」，其中「 in shapes 」表示 “ 以 … 的形状 ” ，即：

希腊人把自然之力化身 (personified) 为半人半兽的形象；

「 the satyr and the faun 」是对前面 “ 半人半兽形象 ” 的补充说明，也就是这个形象的代表是森林之

I amused myself by thinking that in his choice of books he

showed pleasantly the irreconcilable sides of his fantastic nature. It was singular to notice

that even in the weak state of his body he had no thought for its comfort.

Strickland would not go near them, not from any affectation of stoicism, for I found him

seated on a three-legged stool when I went into the studio one day and he was alone, but

because he did not like them.

「 pleasantly 」 : 正好地，合适地，修饰 showed ； fantastic 在这里是指 “ 奇异的，古怪的 ”；

「 irreconcilable sides 」即指 Strickland 奇异的性格中不可调和的方方面面。
