1.whisky-and-soda

这是指加了苏打水的威士忌。大家可能有所了解威士忌是一种烈酒，虽然有人认定只有将威士忌直接

倒入酒杯纯饮，才能获得单一麦芽威士忌的真谛。但是很多人在喝威士忌的时候都会加冰、苏打水或

是其他的东西，依据学理而论，将威士忌加水稀释到 20% 的酒精度，是最能表现出威士忌所有香气的

最佳状态。 By the way~ 中国人发展出 “ 加绿茶 ” 的创新饮法，也是非常流行的，并且特别受年轻人喜

爱。所以威士忌也并没有固定的喝法。

「 cut a ... figure 」 : to convey a particular image; 「 cut such an absurd figure 」 即指 Stroeve 那

3.In the dimness of the landing I could not see him very well, but there was something in his

整句大意：楼梯平台光线很暗，我看不清他的样子，但是他说话的声音却使我吃了一惊。我知道他

历来生活有节制，否则我会以为他酗酒了。

刚刚 “ 我 ” 还不确定他是不是喝醉了，现在进了屋里看清楚了 Stroeve 的状态 “ 我 ” 确信自己推断的没错

了。那么 Stroeve 究竟是不是喝醉了呢？

「 on the point of 」 是指 “ 正要 … 的时候；在 … 之际 ” ； 「 chaff 」 : to make jokes about sb in a

friendly way （友善地）开玩笑，打趣；这是一种比较老式的用法了，相当于 tease 。 「 state 」 即指

当时 Stroeve 整个人的状态，包括情绪样子等。

整句大意：我一点也不怀疑了，他一定是喝醉了。我对他笑了笑，正想要打趣他这副模样。

读到这里大家是不是也和老师一样感觉有大事发生了呀？

6.I supposed that for some reason or other—and Heaven knows

what ingenuity men exercise to torment themselves—Dirk had got it into his head that his wife

破折号之间的内容是做插入语成分， what 引导宾语从句， 「 ingenuity 」 是指 “ 想象力，聪明才智 ” ，

在这里具有讽刺意味； 「 exercise 」 我们才见过哦，这里的意思也是 “ 运用 ” 。调整语序过后就是：

「 devotion 」 : the strong love that you show when you pay a lot of attention to someone or

something 深爱，挚爱；

「 lavish sth. on / upon sb. 」 : to give someone or something a lot of love, praise, money etc 慷慨

地给予 ...... 举个例子： He lavished attention on her. 他对她关怀备至。

「 the devotion he had lavished upon her 」 字面意思是 “ 慷慨地给予她的爱 ” 也就是指 Stroeve 为

了挽留妻子，让她想想自己对她付出的一片真心。

整句大意：他告诉她自己是多么爱她，叫她想一想自己对她的一片真情。

「 implore 」 意为 “ 乞求，哀求 ” ； 「 Have mercy on sb. 」 ：意为 “ 可怜某人，宽恕某人 ” ； Stroeve
