1.Maenad （迈那德）

是指那些追随与崇拜酒神狄奥尼索斯的信女们，因为在酒神祭的狂欢行列中疾呼行走，貌似疯狂了一

般，所以得了这么个名号 ~ 酒神节狂欢的时候，信女们头戴常青藤编的花环，身披兽衣，手持节杖，在

清脆的长笛声和低沉的羯鼓声中，尽情的暴饮，狂热舞蹈。 Maenad 一词也有 “ 暴怒的女人；异常激动

的女人 ” 的意思。今天的阅读中 “ 我 ” 把被欲念控制的 Blanche 说是 Maenad ，突出 Blanche 给 “ 我 ” 的那种疯

狂的印象。

• 句子解析 -

• He had not expected Strickland to take him up on the spot and make his preparations to

go there and then; above all, he had not expected his wife’s decision to go with him.

1. He went over again every word of the scene. Now something occurred to him that he had

not told me before; now he discussed what he ought to have said instead of what he did say;

then he lamented his blindness.

「 take up 」 意为 “ 接纳，接受 ” ，在句中是指 Strickland 同意搬走了。 「 on the spot 」 : if you do

something on the spot, you do it immediately, often without thinking about it very carefully 立即；

当场。 Strickland 不仅同意了，而且还是 Stroeve 一说立马就同意了。

「 there and then 」 相当于 immediately 当即，立即。同意搬走的 Strickland 马上就开始收拾东西

了。真是一点都不带犹豫的 ~

整句大意：他没有想到自己一说， Strickland 就立马同意了，而且马上就收拾起东西来。最出乎他

意料的是，他的妻子也要同 Strickland 一起走。

「 go over 」 : to repeat something in order to explain it or make sure it is correct 重复某事，练习某

事。 「 the scene 」 即赶走 Strickland 结果妻子也要跟着走的这场风波。 Stroeve 又重复了一遍那场

风波的每句话。

1. He was evidently in no state to be left alone. I persuaded him to stay the night with me, and

I put him into my own bed.

1. I do not suppose she had ever really cared for her husband, and what I had taken for love

was no more than the feminine response to caresses and comfort which in the minds of most

women passes for it.

1. It is an emotion made up of the satisfaction in security, pride of property, the pleasure of

being desired, the gratification of a household, and it is only by an amiable vanity that

women ascribe to its spiritual value. It is an emotion which is defenseless against passion.

整句大意：他把那场风波中每人讲的话又重复了一遍。他一会儿想起一件忘记了告诉我的事，一会

儿又同我讨论起他当时该说这句话，而不该说那句话；叹息 (lamented) 自己太盲目了。

「 in no state to do 」 是指 “ （以现在的状态）不宜做某事 ” ；以 Stroeve 目前的情况来看，他不能一

个人独处。

「 put into 」 原意是 “ 把 ...... 放进（或关进、投入）；使穿上；使睡入 ” 句中是指 “ 我 ” 让 Stroeve

在 “ 我 ” 的床上睡觉。

「 take for 」 意思是 “ 误以为，认为 ” ； 「 no more than 」 意为 “ 只不过，仅仅 ” ；原来是 “ 我 ” 把女性对

爱抚 (caresses) 和舒适的反应误以为是爱。所以 “ 我 ” 以前以为 Blanche 爱 Stroeve 是一种误解。

「 which 」 指代的内容是 in the minds of most women passes sth. for it （ it 代表 love ） . 中的 sth. 也

就是大部分女性把这个 sth. 当做了 love ，所以只把 「 which 」 解释成「 response to caresses and

「 pass for 」 : if something passes for another thing, it is so similar to that thing that people think

that is what it is 被看（当）作，被认为是。在大多数女性的脑子里也把这种反应当做爱情。

整句大意：我想她从来就没有真正的喜欢过她的丈夫，过去我误以为她爱 Stroeve ，实际上只是对

那么，爱究竟是什么呢？

句中三个 「 It 」 指代的就是上文提到的 passive feeling （被动的感情）； 「 made up of 」 意为 “ 组

「 the satisfaction in security 」 是指对于有保障的生活的满足； 「 the gratification of a

household 」 是指对于拥有一个家庭的满意 (gratification) 。

「 amiable 」 原意是 “ 友好的，令人愉悦的 ” ； 「 amiable vanity 」 在句中可以理解为 “ 无伤大雅的虚

荣 ” ； 「 ascribe to 」 意思是 “ 认为 ...... 具有 ......” 因为女人那无伤大雅的虚荣心，把这种被动的感情认

为是有精神价值的。

整句大意：这种感情只不过是对有保障的生活的满足，对拥有家产的骄傲，对有人需要自己沾沾自

喜，和对建立起自己的家庭的满意而已；女人赋予这种感情精神层面的价值，只是出于一种无伤大

雅的虚荣。（但是）在冲动的热情前面，这种感情是毫无防卫能力的 (defenseless) 。

Stroeve 的激情激起了但是没有满足 that part of her nature，而这里讲的她这一部分天性，指代的

就是前文提到的 sexual attraction 和真正的爱， Blanche 对 Stroeve 的感情其实就是那种被动的感

情，而非爱情。

她讨厌 Strickland 是因为自己无意识地感觉到他有自己需要的那种力量。至于为什么要讨厌他呢，

这或许是因为 Blanche 还并不清楚这种感受究竟是什么，又为什么带来一种恐惧，正如下文提到的

一样， “ 我 ” 猜测与其说是对 Strickland 的恐惧，倒不如说是她把自己的恐惧移植到 Strickland 身上

了。所以后来，当看清楚自己的需要的时候，不顾丈夫的反对，不顾 Strickland 的无所谓，也不顾

将要面对的一切困难，决心要跟着 Strickland 。这也是昨天我们谈到的人性和感情的错综复杂的一

个表现。

「 untamed 」 : allowed to remain in a wild state; not changed, controlled or influenced by anyone;

not tamed 野性的，未调教的； untamed passion 即指 “ 野性的激情 ” 。

「 wild beings 」 即指之前小说中提到的那些半人半兽的生物。 「 matter 」 指 “ 物质 ” 即史前时期

(early history) 宇宙中的万事万物，这些物质和大地保持着原始联系 (early connection) ，但是好像又

有其自身的精神。

整句大意：他给人以一种（富有）野性激情的印象，也许她同我一样，在他身上感到某种邪恶

(sinister element) ；这种邪恶使我想到史前时期的那些半人半兽的生物，那时宇宙万物同大地还保

「 of no account 」 也作 of little account 意思是 not important 不重要，没关系。组成她生活的每件事
