1.the Place Pigalle 皮加勒广场

（ Place Pigalle ）是法国巴黎的一个广场，位于巴黎第九区 , 介于克利希大道（ Boulevard de Clichy ）

和罗什舒阿尔大道（ Boulevard de Rochechouart ）之间，靠近圣心堂（ Sacré-Cœur ），在蒙马特山

脚下。这个广场得名于雕塑家让 · 巴蒂斯特 · 皮加勒（ Jean-Baptiste Pigalle ），附近是著名的皮加勒区

（ Quartier Pigalle ）。 19 世纪末，皮加勒广场及附近街道，是画家工作室和文学咖啡馆的街区，其中

最为著名的是 “ 新雅典 ” （ Nouvelle Athènes ）

1.Dirk’s hands moved strangely, as though they had nothing to do with his body, with a

presumed that Strickland knew what had happened, for someone must have been to see him

from the police, and he must have made his statement.

5.It was curious that she should not wish to see him. Perhaps she refused to have him sent

for because she knew he would refuse to come. I wondered what an abyss of cruelty she must

have looked into/that in horror she refused to live.

6.He was too tired to weep. He lay on his back limply, as though all the strength had gone out

of his limbs, and presently I saw that he had fallen asleep. It was the first natural sleep he had

had for a week. Nature, sometimes so cruel, is sometimes merciful.

「 drive 」 ： (of a fact or feeling) compel (someone) to act in a particular way, especially one that

is considered undesirable or inappropriate 驱使 .「 poor creature 」 可怜的人，这里指 blanche ；

「 abyss 」 ： a very deep hole that seems to have no bottom; 深渊；所以 「 an abyss of

cruelty 」 是说 “ 残酷无情的深渊 ” 。 「 that 」 在这里做连词，表示 “ 以至于、竟然 ” 。

7.We went at a foot-pace, but on the way back we trotted, and there was something to my

mind singularly horrible/ in the way the driver of the hearse whipped up his horses. It seemed

to dismiss the dead with a shrug of the shoulders.

「 first natural sleep 」 这里的 natural 其实就是对应就是之前 Dirk 吃安眠药才能入睡的时候，指这是

一周来他第一次不靠吃药入睡。

「 Nature …merciful 」 这句话很精辟， 「 nature 」 这里有两层理解 : 一、和前面的 natural sleep 形

成一个结构上的对仗，就是说这种睡眠是 “ 自然而然的 ” ，因为 Stroeve 确实太过于疲惫，所以 “ 上

天 ” （ nature ）给他休憩的机会。这是 mericiful 的一面；二、 cruel 的一面在于他的悲痛、他的疲惫

也是 nature( 上苍和命运 ) 给的。这里含有典型的 predestination 的哲学色彩，此处的 nature 采用了喻

称的修辞。

Blanche 最终离开了人世，在没有读到这里之前，我猜想 Dirk 一定会痛苦流涕，失去了挚爱之人，

他应该会以什么样的方式活下去呢？但是出乎意料的，他没有哭，而是很快睡去。直到最后他也没

有做出任何的反抗， Blanche 亦是。

「 foot-pace 」 一步的距离，意为很慢。 「 trot 」 马的小跑 ; 人快步走。 「 singular 」 ：

strange or unusual; 这个意思也不是太常见，大家可以注意一下哦 ~ 这句话意思是 “ 去的路上灵车走

的很慢；回来的时候，马车小跑起来，让我心里莫名的恐惧。 ” （从下文可知， “ 我 ” 和 Stroeve 乘坐

的马车是跟在灵车后面的，所以灵车的变速我们能够清晰地感知到。）

「 dismiss 」 ： to stop considering; rid one's mind of; dispel ；表示 “ 彻底遗忘 ” ；「 a shrug of the

shoulders 」耸耸肩。此句大意： “ 驾驶灵车的车夫不断挥鞭打马，似乎耸耸肩，就能把死去的人彻

底的遗忘 ”
