新的一个月开始了， 2 月还有春节，希望大家坚持读书，每天都开开心心的。

• 背景知识 -

1.cousins twice removed 英语中的表亲关系

当用 ”removed” 这个词来描述一种关系时，它表明这两个人是不同的世代。你和你的第一个堂兄弟在同

一代人（比你的祖父母更年轻两代），所以 “removed” 这个词不能用来形容你们的关系。

两次 removed 意味着有两代差异。你比你祖母的第一代表妹年轻两代，所以你和你祖母的表亲是表

亲。

给大家上个图，来看一下这个复杂的关系。

1. 夏尔丹（ Chardin ）

法国画家。 1699 年 11 月 2 日生于巴黎， 1779 年 12 月 6 日卒于同地。法国 18 世纪市民艺术的杰出代表，他

的画能赋予静物以生命，给人以动感。晚期以家庭风俗画为主，表现第三等级 ” 小人物 ” 的日常生活，画

风平易、朴实，具有平和亲切之感，反映了新兴市民阶层的美学理想。夏尔丹的艺术能力主要来自自

学，他受到 17 世纪尼德兰画家和现实主义的影响。一开始他遇到了不少困难。他开始练习半身像速

写，成为他的作画主题的有演出中的孩子，沉思中的厨房女佣。这些普通下层人民的日常生活场景，

都是当时法国艺术界认为不值得描绘的主题。

《洗萝卜的女人》

• He was dressed in the deepest mourning, and on his bowler was a broad black band. He

had even a black border to his handkerchief. His garb of woe suggested that he had lost in

one catastrophe every relation he had in the world, even to cousins by marriage twice

removed.

1. The ridicule he had endured for years seemed now to weigh him down, and the final blow of

Blanche’s treachery had robbed him of the resiliency/which had made him take it so gaily. He

could no longer laugh with those who laughed at him. He was an outcast.

这一段描写衬托出了 Dirk 失去 Blanche 的伤心欲绝以及对她深切的悼念。

「 the deepest mourning 」 最深切的悼念， 「 black border 」 border 有边饰的意思，这里即指 “ 黑

色的边饰。 ” 前两句是对 Dirk 外貌穿着的描写，大意是 “ 他重丧在身，圆顶礼帽上系着一条宽宽的黑

丝带，连手帕也镶着黑边。 ”

「 garb of woe 」 指 “ 一身丧服 ” ， 「 cousins twice removed 」 可以理解为 “ 远房亲戚 ” 。后面那句话

的意思是 “ 他这身深表悲痛的装束会让人以为，在一次灾祸中他失去了世间所有的亲人，甚至嫡表

远亲。 ”

从 Dirk 的装束中我们可以看出他内心的悲痛，失去了挚爱之人所能做的就只剩下在活人世界里悼念

她，怀着对她无尽的思念。

1. My father wished me to become a carpenter like himself. For five generations we’ve carried

on the same trade, from father to son. Perhaps that is the wisdom of life, to tread in your

father’s steps, and look neither to the right nor to the left.

When I was a little boy I said I would marry the daughter of the harness-maker who lived next

door. She was a little girl with blue eyes and a flaxen pigtail. She would have kept my house

like a new pin, and I should have had a son to carry on the business after me.

「 weigh sb down 」 to make a person feel worried and unhappy because of problems,

responsibilities, and duties ，使某人心情沉重。举个栗子： Too much responsibility can weigh

down on a child. 所以逗号前面第一句话的意思是 “ 多少年来，他忍受的嘲笑，现在似乎已将他击

垮。 ”

「 robbed him of 」 rob sb. of sth 意思是抢走某人的某物。「 which 」后面引导的句子修饰

resiliency （恢复能力）。大意是 “Blanche 的背叛给了他最后一击（ blow ），使他无力 (rob him of

the resiliency) 再笑脸 (gaily) 相迎。 ”

outcast 被抛弃的人，最后两句的大意是 “ 他不再和那些嘲笑他的人一起大笑。他是一个被遗弃的

人。 ”

我们能看到 Blanche 死后 Dirk 的转变，你认为他毫无自尊心吗？是的，自尊心什么也不是，它仅代

表一个人对自己价值的估量。最后他还是要回归故乡，不带走一丝一毫的东西，因为值得他留恋的

东西已经不在了。

「 we’ve carried… trade 」 carry on 有继续的意思，所以这句话意思是 “ 我们家五代都做这个生

意 ” 。 「 to tread … steps 」 tread in 踩入， “ 踩父亲走过的脚步 ” ，其实就是 “ 沿着父亲走过路走下

去。 ”

第一段话的大意是： “ 我父亲希望我像他一样，当个木匠，我们家五代都干这个，父传子，一代代

传下去，也许，这就是生活的智慧，永远踩着父亲的脚印走下去，不用左顾右盼。 “

「 harness maker 」 做马挽具的人，给大家上个马挽具的图

1. “The world is hard and cruel. We are here none knows why, and we go none knows whither.

We must be very humble. We must see the beauty of quietness. We must go through life so

inconspicuously that Fate does not notice us. And let us seek the love of simple, ignorant

people. Their ignorance is better than all our knowledge. Let us be silent, content in our little

corner, meek and gentle like them. That is the wisdom of life.”

1. When I left him, after we had buried poor Blanche, Stroeve walked into the house with a

heavy heart. Something impelled him to go to the studio, some obscure desire for self-torture,

and yet he dreaded the anguish that he foresaw.

「 flaxen pigtail 」 亚麻色的辫子。 「 kept … new pin 」 pin 作为名词有干净整洁的意思，所以这句

话意思是 “ 把家里收拾的干净整洁。 “ 第二段话的大意是 “ 小时候，我说我要和隔壁做马具那家的女儿

结婚。她是一个长着蓝眼睛。扎着亚麻色辫子的小女孩儿。我要是和她结了婚，她会把我的家收拾

的干干净净，还会给我生个儿子，继承我的手艺。 ”

这两句都是 Stroeve 本来应该有的一个生活，如果他没去意大利画画，那么他就会在荷兰老家娶妻

生子继承父业。其实回头看来，这样安静美好的生活也没有什么不好，比起现在悲惨的他，可以说

是很幸福了。但是他选择了另外一种方式，同样也是追求自己喜欢做的事情，但是好像现在看来他

搞砸了。

这句话说的特别好，毛姆就是在平淡的叙事之中娓娓道来一个道理，同学们可以把这段文字摘录进

自己的笔记本哦 ~

本句大意： “ 世界冰冷而残酷。没有人知道我们从哪里来，到哪里去。我们必须深怀谦卑。我们必

须看到宁静之美。我们必须隐忍地生活，这样命运之神才不会注目我们。让我们去寻求淳朴、善良

者的爱吧。他们的无知比我们的知识更可贵。让我们保持沉默满足于我们小小角落，像他们一样平

静温顺吧。这才是生活的智慧。 ”

「 a heavy heart 」 沉重的心情， 「 some obscure desire for self-torture 」 obscure ，模糊的。

这句话指 “ 某种模糊的、自我折磨的欲望。

本句大意：那天，在我们埋葬了可怜的 Blanche ，我和 Dirk 分别后，他怀着沉重的心情回到家。鬼

1. What had happened could only be a dream, a frightful dream; and when he turned the key

and opened the door, he would see her bending slightly over the table in the gracious attitude

of the woman in Chardin’s Benedicite, which always seemed to him so exquisite.

这幅画的主题是一个资产阶级每天平静的生活

为什么 Stroeve 选择回去呢？画室已经成了他的伤心地了，他把画室让出来为了成全 Strickland 和

Blanche 两个人，而如今他选择回去的理由是什么呢？

「 get his … ascent 」 ascent 指上楼，前半部分描绘 Stroeve 上楼气喘吁吁的样子，因为我们都知

道他是一个胖乎乎的人，行动不便。这句话意思是 “ 他想起，多少次他气喘吁吁地爬上楼梯，总要

在门口站一会儿，让呼吸平复一下再进去。 ”

「 take it away again 」 it 指的是他的呼吸， “ 真是可笑，因为他急切地想看到 Blanche ，所以呼吸总

是难以平静。 ”

「 to see… delight 」 to-do 做主语， 「 as if 」引导虚拟语气，「 part 」做动词，分开的。这句话描

述了他对 Blanche 的爱。 “ 看到她，他总是满心喜悦，这些年始终未变，哪怕出门不到一个小时，一

想要见到她就喜不自胜，仿佛分别了一个月。 ”

「 in the gracious attitude of 」 和蔼的姿势。

「 Benedicite 」 是指夏尔丹的一幅画《 Le Bénédicité 》

本句大意 : 已经发生的，不过是一个梦，可怕的梦；当他转动钥匙打开门，他多想像平常一样看

到，她态度亲切，身体微微前倾，俯在餐桌上，对于他来说，这和夏尔丹的《饭前祈祷》里那位女

人的姿态一样优美。

在艺术界认为不值得描绘的主题，但是在 Stroeve 眼中都是精致的美 , 这里我们其实也能看出为什么

Stroeve 为什么不能成为一个著名的画家，因为他的品味使然。
