1.a Roland for my Oliver

据说，法兰克国王查理曼 (Charlemagne ， 742-814) 麾下有十二位武士，其中最出色的是罗兰 (Roland)

和奥利弗 (Oliver) 。他们功业相若，武艺也相当。有一次，两人约定比武一决雌雄，可是，打了五天，

谁都占不了对方丝毫便宜，彼此惺惺相惜，做了好朋友。后来，人们就用 a Roland for an Oliver 这个成

语来 “ 势均力敌 ” 或 “ 以牙还牙 ” 。

• 句子解析 -

1.But one fact he made clear to me: people talk of beauty lightly, and having no feeling for

words, they use that one carelessly, so that it loses its force; and the thing it stands for,

sharing its name with a hundred trivial objects, is deprived of dignity.They call beautiful a

dress, a dog, a sermon; and when they are face to face with Beauty cannot recognize it.

「 that one 」 和 「 it 」 都指代 beauty 。分号前面这一句的意思是 “ 他让我明白了：人们随随便便的谈

论美，却不知美为何物，这个词已被用滥了，失去了它原有的力量。 ” ；

2.The false emphasis with which they try to deck their worthless thoughts blunts their

susceptibilities. Like the charlatan who counterfeits a spiritual force he has sometimes felt,

they lose the power they have abused.

3.“We both loved Blanche. There would have been room for him in my mother’s house.I think

the company of poor, simple people would have done his soul a great good. I think he might

have learnt from them something that would be very useful to him.”

「 sharing…objects 」 这一句做插入语修饰 「 the thing 」 ，意思是 “ 成百上千琐碎的事物都以美为

名 ” 。「 is deprived of dignity 」 be deprive of sth 剥夺某物， dignity 意思是自尊，尊贵。

「 They call beautiful a dress 」 正常的语序是 they call a dress beautiful, 在这里是想要强调

beautiful, 意思的时候是 “ 他们认为一条裙子很美。 ”「 Beauty 」 在这里大写是因为强调。所以后面

整句话的意思是 “ 成百上千琐碎的事物都以美为名，使美本身的含义荡然无存。一件衣服，一只

狗，一篇布道辞（ sermon ），都很美。但当人们和真正的美相遇，反而辨认不出。

「 which 」 指代 「 false emphasis 」 ， they try to deck their worthless thoughts with false

emphasis ； 「 deck 」 这里不是甲板的意思哦，是装饰，修饰，掩饰的意思。「 blunt their

susceptibilities 」 意思是 “ 让他们的感觉变得迟钝。 ” 所以第一句话的意思是 “ 人们极力掩饰自己毫无

价值的思想，这种错误的着重点（随时随地都在用美这个词称赞事物），让他们的感觉变得迟

钝。 ”

「 who 」 引导的从句部分修饰 「 charlatan 」 ，这句话里面还有个难点是嵌套的一个从句， 「 he

has sometimes felt 」 修饰 「 a spiritual force 」 ，这里是说：就像是一个伪装说自己时不时能感

受到精神力量的骗子一样；后面一句话中他们所失去的力量实际上指的是对美的鉴赏力，这里是承

接着前面的内容，因为大部分人把美等同于衣服狗布道辞等东西，以至于他们没能力去鉴赏真正的

美。

其实这里的美，对于 Stroeve 而言，其实就是 Strickland 画的画，他能欣赏出 Strickland 的才华，在那

个大家都以为 Strickland 是异类的年代，只有他一眼看出了他的天赋。

「 the company of 」 指 “… 的陪伴 ” 。 「 would … great good 」 would have done, 是一个固定用法 ,

表示对过去事情的假设 , 是 “ 本来会做什么 ” 的意思 , 但是实际上没有做成。这句话的意思是 “ 对他的灵

魂有好处。 ”

本句大意 : 我们都爱布兰奇，在我老家有房子给他住。我想，和贫穷、善良的人们在一起，对他的

灵魂有好处。从他们身上，他能学到有用的东西。

事到如今， Stroeve 却邀请 Strickland 和他一起回荷兰，也许同学们读到这里都觉得不可思议，他邀

请的这个人，占据了他的住所， “ 抢走 ” 了他的妻子，并且间接地害死了她，而 Stroeve 仍然想着能够

感化他。在这里很难用言语来形容像 Stroeve 这样的人，也许他是真的被 Strickland 的天赋所打败

吧。

4.I felt that his chance was to put all the past behind him.I hoped that the grief which now

seemed intolerable would be softened by the lapse of time, and a merciful forgetfulness would

help him to take up once more the burden of life.

5.The sight of him brought back to me all the horror which I was not unwilling to forget, and I

felt in me a sudden repulsion for the cause of it.

6.It was characteristic of him to display geniality with anyone who showed a disinclination to

meet him, and the coolness of my greeting can have left him in little doubt of that.

7.“I think you’re detestable. You’re the most loathsome beast that it’s ever been my

misfortune to meet.Why do you seek the society of someone who hates and despises you?”

「 put all the past behind him 」 put sth. behind sb. 将某事置于脑后， 「 by the lapse of time 」

随着时间的流逝

「 take up… of life 」 once more 有重整旗鼓的意思， take up 拿起，承担起。这句话的意思是 “ 再次

承担起生活的重担。

本句大意：我感觉他有机会去忘掉过去。我希望他现在无法忍受的悲伤，随着时间的推移，能慢慢

减轻，仁慈的遗忘也能帮他再次承担起生活的重任。

「 the sight of… me 」 the sight of 表示 “ 一看见 ” ，这句话意思是 “ 一看到他，我就想起 …” ；

「 which 」 修饰 horror ，什么样的恐怖的事情呢？我想忘记却忘不了的恐怖的事情。 「 a sudden…

of it 」 其中 it 指代我见到他让我想到可怕的事情，这让我厌恶，反感。 「 repulsion 」 指厌恶感，排

斥力。

本句大意：一看见他，我就想起那些想忘也忘不了的恐怖事，立马对他心生厌恶。

「 be characteristic of 」 指 “ 具有 … 的特性 ” ，这个特性其实就是 「 it 」 指代的 「 to display

geniality 」 ， 「 who 」 修饰前面的 「 anyone 」 , 代指 “ 任何见到他就表现出厌烦之情的人。 “

「 have left…that 」 其中的 「 that 」 指的是我对他冷漠的态度， 「 leave in little doubt 」 留下很少

的疑问，换句话说就是他没什么疑问。

本句大意：对于一见到他就表现出厌烦之情的人，他总是非常亲切，这是他的一个特点，从我刚才

的冷漠态度，他知道我对他的看法。

「 detestable 」 令人厌恶的， 「 you’re the …to meet 」 其中， 「 loathsome 」 也有 “ 讨厌的 “ 意思，

所以前两句话的意思是 “ 我觉得你很可恶，真是我遇见过的最恶心的禽兽。 ”

8.“My dear fellow, what the hell do you suppose I care what you think of me?” “Damn it all,” I

said, more violently because I had an inkling my motive was none too creditable, “I don’t want

to know you.” “Are you afraid I shall corrupt you?” His tone made me feel not a little

ridiculous.

9.“You’ve come down in the world if you can bring yourself to flatter.”

He grinned.

“You’ll never really dislike me so long as I give you the opportunity to get off a good thing

now and then.”

「 seek the society of someone 」 这句里的 「 seek 」 意思是 attempt or desire to obtain or

achieve (something). 追寻 「 the society of 」 the situation of being in the company of other people

其他人的陪伴。什么样的人呢？ 「 who 」 后面进行了补充 , “ 讨厌和鄙视你的人 ” 。所以后面这句话的

意思是 “ 为什么非要缠着讨厌你、瞧不起你的人呢？ ”

「 I had …creditable 」 ，其中 「 none too 」 是 “ 根本不 ” 的意思，举个栗子： The doctor arrived

none too soon ， as Mary's fever was very alarming ．玛丽发烧温度高得吓人，可医生并没有及时

赶到。

「 creditable 」 意思是 worthy of belief, 值得相信的。所以这句话的大意是 “ 我隐约觉得自己的动机很

不值得被相信。 ”「 corrupt 」 指 “ 使 … 腐化堕落 ” 。

本句大意： ‘ 老弟，你以为我会在意你对我的看法吗 ?’‘ 他妈的， ’ 我说，因为隐约觉得自己的动机很

不值得被相信，我更加气愤。 ‘ 我不想认识你。 ’‘ 怕我会把你带坏吗 ?’

Strickland 这个人，实在是那个物欲横流的社会中的一股奇怪的清流，人情世故是很重要的，但对

于他来说就是狗屁，他并不在意任何人的看法，这也是为什么他抛弃所有去追逐自己的梦想。

从 “ 我 “ 与 Strickland 的这段对话我们可以看出他真的不在乎任何东西除了画画。

「 come down in the world 」 ： to lose one’s wealth or social status;to lose one’s social position

or financial standing. 这里的意思是失去了以往的财富，已经很穷了。

「 bring yourself to flatter 」 ： bring oneself to do 有强迫自己做某事的意思， flatter 这里是做的不

及物动词，意为：奉承某人，低声下气。这句话 the narrator 是说： “ 要是你这样低声下气，那真的

是穷得叮当响了 ” 这一句其实是承接了上一句 Strickland 的冷嘲热讽， “ 要是我以为自己能从你那里

借到钱，那我就是个大傻瓜 ” 。

「 get off a good thing 」 ： get off 本身有很多种意思，这里是： succeed in uttering ,especially a

joke. 这里就是讲个笑话的意思。这句话是说： “ 只要我能时不时讲个笑话让你开心一下，你就不会

真的讨厌我 ” 再给大家举个栗子： Carl always manage to get off a good one before he gets

serious.

Strickland 还真是超乎常人地厚脸皮呢，后文也提到了，他敏锐的直觉似乎察觉到了 “ 我 ” 对他不是

真的厌恶，也比较难坚持对他的厌恶。
