• French “not so damned technical”

昨天的背景知识里讲到，英国当局非常死板，相比之下，法国人就比较懂得变通。他们以骨子里的浪

漫主义精神而闻名，有各种风流韵事 (affairs) ，懂得享受生活之乐（ joie de vivre ），也就对一些规章制

度的态度显得比较宽松。这也是出自今天 Captain Nichols 对法国的评价，当然这其实都是他对英国的

调侃。

“ 浪漫 ” 的法国人

其实，这是对法国人的一个 “ 偏见 ” ，去过国外的法国人普遍发现只有英语国家和东亚国家总说法国浪

漫。而亚洲国家的这个观点显然是从英语国家漂泊而来的。如果你去法国旅游，遇见法国人说他们很

浪漫，他们会一头雾水的，也就是说现代法国人并不认为自己具有这种特质。

1. Marseilles in the late 19th & early 20th century （ 19 世纪末 20 世纪初的马赛）

本书的故事发生在 19 与 20 世纪之交。在 19 世纪，这座城市是工业创新和加工业发展的中心。法兰西帝

国的崛起和 1830 年以来法国的殖民扩张（尤其是阿尔及利亚）激励着海外贸易，世界各地的船只纷至

沓来，这也促进了这座港口城市的繁荣。海上的机遇在 1869 年苏伊士运河开通后更多了；到 20 世纪上

半叶，马赛更是在 1906 年至 1922 年的殖民扩张保证了其贸易和 “ 帝国港 ” 的地位。

光有黑人，也有因为各种原因沦落至此的白人。书中的 Strickland 和 Captain 便是他们中的两员。

• The Asile de Nuit ( 夜间收容所 )is a large stone building where pauper and vagabond may get

a bed for a week, provided their papers are in order and they can persuade the friars in charge

that they are working-men.

「 provided their papers are in order 」 是条件从句，有以下知识点：

「 provided 」 =on the condition that… ，这里是连词，意思是如果 … ；这种用法经常在商业文书、

法律文件中出现 , 再举个例子： The other banks are going to be very eager to help, provided that

they see that he has a specific plan.

「 papers are in order 」 其中 「 papers 」 是指证件、文书 ；「 in order 」 =(of an official

document) that can be used because it is all correct and legal; 这部分意思是证件是有效的

「 in charge 」 是修饰前面的 friars的，意思是管事的（修士）。

1. Captain Nichols noticed Strickland for his size and his singular appearance among the

crowd that waited for the doors to open; they waited listlessly, some walking to and fro, some

leaning against the wall, and others seated on the curb with their feet in the gutter; and when

they filed into the office he heard the monk who read his papers address him in English.

1. After a moment’s hesitation, Strickland scrambled to his feet, and together they went to the

Bouchée de Pain( 施舍面包的救济所 ), where the hungry are given a wedge of bread, which they

must eat there and then, for it is forbidden to take it away; and then to the Cuillère de

Soupe( 施舍汤的救济所 ), where for a week, at eleven and four, you may get a bowl of thin, salt

soup.

1. Their career was devoid of adventure, if by adventure you mean unexpected or thrilling

incident, for their days were occupied in the pursuit of enough money to get a night’s lodging

and such food as would stay the pangs of hunger.

本句大意：夜间收容所是一幢庞大的石头建筑物，穷人 (pauper) 和流浪汉 (vagabond) 能够在这寄宿

「 walking to and fro 」 意思是来回走动，类似的短语还有： walk back and forth 。

「 heard…address 」 这里总体来看是 「 hear sb. do sth. 」 的结构，表示听到某人做某事，我们来

看看这里的 sb. 和 do 分别是什么 : 此处 sb. 是被从句「 who read his papers 」修饰的 the monk( 道士 ) ，

表示检查 (read) 他的证件的道士；而 do 是这里的「 address 」 = to speak or write to someone ，理解

为交流；那么整个部分的意思就是：听到那个检查他证件的道士在和他交流。

本句大意： Captain Nichols 注意到 Strickland 是因为他在那群等着（夜宿店）的门开门的人群中显

分到一块 (a wedge of) 面包。

「 which 」 修饰前面 「 where 」 从句最后面的 bread，其中 「 there and then 」 意思是此时此地，

这部分意思是（面包）必须在此时此地吃完。

本句大意：犹豫了一会儿， Strickland 从地上仓促起身，两个人向施舍面包的就急所走去，在那里

「 was devoid of 」 是一个常用的短语， =be lack of ，表示缺乏 …

「 if by adventure you mean 」 这是个对前面的 adventure 做补充说明的条件从句，正常的语序是 if

you mean …by adventure ，其中 by 在这里表示通过 … 的说法，整个句子的意思是如果你说 “ 冒险 ” ，

意思是 … 其实这是一个口语中非常实用的句型，特别是你在开玩笑的时候经常能听到： We are

gonna hang out, and by “we”, I mean he and I, without you. 这句话其实可以用来表达 : 我们要去

「 in pursuit of 」 =going after/longing for ，意思是渴望 …

「 such…hunger 」 其中 「 such…as 」 表示那种（物品）能够 … ， as 在这里引导定语从句修饰前

面的 food ； 「 stay the pangs of hunger 」 此处 stay=to stop the process of ，表示暂停，整个短语

的的意思就是权且充饥。

本句大意：他们的旅途 (career) 缺少冒险，如果你觉得 “ 冒险 ” 指的是意料之外或令人激动的事的话；

「 account of 」 短语：关于 … 的记述， 「 in the low life 」 表示 “related to lower social classes.”

「 came their way 」 用来修饰前面的 「 various characters 」 ; 短语本义是来到他们的路上，引申

「 whither…a man 」 这里是修饰前面的 Place Victor Gélu( 维克多 · 耶鲁广场 ) 的从句，正常的语序是

whither ships’ captains came in search of a man. ；意思是船长们都来这里寻觅想要的人（ a man

在这里指的是特定的人，而不是一个人）

a profit (he took the first month’s wages of the sailor/ for whom he found a berth), and he

provided Strickland with those of an English stoker /who had providentially died on his hands.

「 obese…degradation 」 其这两个插入语都是形容 American woman 的；

「 not a matter to disconcert 」 意思是并不是一件令他不快的事 (matter) ，这件事指的是前面

Strickland 没有证件。

「 for whom he found a berth 」 是一个修饰 sailor的从句，意思是那些通过 Tough Bill 找到职位

(berth) 的水手。

「 those of 」 这里是说 Tough Bill 把英国司炉 (stoker) 身上的那些（证件）给 Strickland

本句大意： Strickland 没有证件，但这并没有令 Tough Bill 不快，（因为）当他发现有利可图的时候

（他把水手的第一个月工资拿走，因为他给他们找了个职位），（所以）他把曾在他手下 (on his

hand) 意外死亡的英国司炉身上的那些（证件）给了 Strickland.

「 flying…mate 」 这一部分都是形容偷吃了一顿美餐的 Nichols 船长被发现的场景。其中 「 flying

headlong down 」 是飞快地 (flying) 头朝前 (headlong) 滚下去 (down) ； 「 before … angry mate 」 意

思是在愤怒的大副 (mate) 提起 (uplifted) 脚之前；这个部分的意思是：（ Nichols ）在愤怒的大副抬起

脚之前，脑袋朝下滚落梯板 (gangway) 。也就是滚下了船，大家可以看看下图的 gangway 。

「 spirit of the Mercantile Marine 」 意思是（英国）商船的精神。什么样的精神呢？从前文我们可

以看出， Nichols 船长眉飞色舞地讲道，到英国船上饱餐一顿被高级船员抓到只会被踢一脚，因为

他们要考虑自己的风纪。此处其实是 Captain Nichols 自我调侃，他离开祖国之后，一面抱怨英国办

事死板，一面又毫不掩饰自己的爱国精神，在谈论到自己国家的商船时兴高采烈的，看的出他还是

很享受当 “ 英国人 ” 的。所以这里的商船精神实际上象征着： I am a British people.

本句大意：我脑子里能活生生地出现一幅图画：一个气冲冲的大副飞起一脚， Captian Nichols 脑

袋朝下滚落梯板，还就像一个真正的英国人那样，享受着英国商船的精神。

为什么说 Captain Nichols 就像一个真的英国人一样，享受着英国商船严肃的风气呢？还记得咱们

昨天在背景知识中介绍的英国的严肃认真的刻板印象吗？虽然 Captain Nichols 在 “ 我 ” 面前吐槽当局

太过死板，但作为一个英国人的他，又认为严肃认真绝对是英国人的好品质，因此呢，即使被严厉

的船员踹下船，自己也认为「作为英国人，这么认真负责当然是好事呀！
