1.the Sailors’ Home （水手之家）

水手之家是真实存在的，旨在为没有出海的船员提供价格低廉食宿，比较有名的就是 Sailors' Home

Sydney 。这是在澳大利亚悉尼，水手们曾经住在这里，直到 1980 年改造成监狱。只有水手才使用这个

房子，但是现在这栋建筑里还有一家餐厅 Wild Ginger Dining + Bar 。

2.Stoker 司炉

文中提到了几次 stoker 了，那司炉是干什么的呢？ stoker 或者 fireman 是旧是为保证蒸汽机运转而工作的

人的职位。在蒸汽机车上通常使用 fireman 这个词，而在轮船和固定式蒸汽机上，这个词通常是 stoker

（尽管英国商船海军确实使用了 fireman ）。 他们主要的工作是艰苦的体力劳动，例如把燃料，通常是

煤，铲进发动机的燃烧室。

1. 为什么船被称作 “ 她 ” ？

一个文学上的解释是拉丁语中 “ 船 ” ： Navis 的性别是女性。 但其实人们普遍认同 “ship as a she” 现象这

意的，所以在没有人监督的情况下会想着怠工；而且也不会服从和自己一个等级的土著人的监督，所

以种植园主要请一个白人来当监工。

「 can’t make head or tail of 」 ：也写作 can't make heads or tails of 。意思是不明白不理解，相

「 am aware that 」 是常用的句型 be aware that… ，表示意识到了 …

本句大意：我尽量把这些描写清楚，因为我喜欢把他的这段经历和之前我所看到他在 Ashley

Gardens 过着的生活作对比，当时他正忙于做生意；但我意识到， Captain Nichols 是一个耸人听闻

「 from a single bone 」 本该放到句子的最后面的，这里为了强调而提前；意思是需要以一根骨头
