• 背景知识 -

1.Foot( 英尺 )&inch( 英寸 )

Foot 简称 ft ，正如同英尺的英文单词意义一样，古英国时期因为没有国际公认的度量单位，所以人们往

往使用自己的脚来测量实地的面积，久而久之，一种基于成年男子单脚的长度就被公认为英国等国家

认可的标准度量衡。德国人出了一招，让最早从教堂出来的 16 个男子量出左脚的长度加在一起，再除

以 16 ，得到的就是一尺。

单位换算是： 1 foot 英尺 ( 呎 ) =12 inches 英寸 ( 吋 ) = 30.48 centimetres( 厘米 )=0.3048meters( 米 )

1.Well, after I’d talked to her I sent for Strickland, and I said to him: ‘Strickland, it’s time for

you to settle down. A man of your age shouldn’t go playing about with the girls down at the

front. They’re bad lots, and you’ll come to no good with them.

2.It’s time she settled down too, and besides, the captains and the first mates like a change

「 make an ice 」 就是做冰淇淋啦 ~

「 sent for 」 to request by message to come : summon ；表示叫某人过来

「 down at the front 」 是修饰前面 girls 的短语，形容她们是在哪里；说明 girls 所在的地方地势低；

at the front 是指在 … 的前端，我们从后面的内容可以看出这里是在海港的前端。

「 bad lots 」 =a worthless, unreliable, immoral, or dishonest person : troublemaker ；这是侮辱性

「 come to no good 」 = come to a bad end ，这里就是说 ( 跟这些港口边的女人混 ) 没有好结果。

本句大意：嗯，我和她 (Ata) 谈了以后，我就让 Strickland 过来，和他说： “Strickland ，你现在该安

顿下来了。一个像你这样年纪的人不应该再同下边那些码头边上的女人鬼混了。她们都不是啥好东

西，你跟她们在一起不会有好结果的。 ”

「 It’s time… 」 后面跟一句话是表示：现在该 … 了。后面跟的一句话使用虚拟语气表示建议的语

气。也可以改写为 It’s time she should settle down.

「 like a change 」 这里说的是船长和大副喜欢时不时地换女人。

「 it is now 」 是修饰前面的 price 的，表示现在的价格。

本句大意：现在她也该安顿下来了，再说，那些船长和大副喜欢时不时地换女人。我不会让我的姑

「 the hussy 」 是作为插入语补充说明 She(Ata) ，意思是这个丫头。

「 iron a blouse 」 表示熨烫一件罩衫，后面的 「 that 」 从句表示她洗好的那件。

本句大意：她知道我在说些什么，这个鬼丫头，我用眼角余光看到她正用耳朵听着，同时还在假装

「 broke off 」 =suddenly stop doing or saying. 这里表示说话突然停下来。这个短语还可以表示结

束一段关系。

「 addressed herself to me 」 其中 address to=to say something directly to some specific person

or group ；这里表示直接跟我提起她自己的事。

本句大意： Tiaré 突然停下她 ( 关于 Strickland 的 ) 描述，开始直接若有所思地 (reflectively) 跟我提起她

的事情。我的第一任丈夫， Captain Johnson ，曾经常打我。

「 there is no holding 」 used to describe someone who is particularly determined or cannot be

prevented from doing something. 这是一个常用短语，表示谁也阻止不了他 ( 打我 ) 。

「 black and ... time 」 都是用来形容 Tiaré 被打的惨状。其中 「 black and blue 」 表示青一块紫一

块，专门用来形容被打伤； 「 all over 」 表示全身； 「 for days 」 表示好几天； 「 at a time 」 表示

被打一次，就 ... 这部分意思是：被打一次就全身青一块紫一块好几天。

本句大意：他很帅，六尺三高 ( 约 1 米 9) ，当他醉了的时候没人能拉住他，然后我被他打一次就全身

「 get over 」 =overcome, get through ，表示克服。

「 It is not till/until A that B 」 这是一个常用句型，表示直到 A 发生， B 才 …

「 You can never tell… 」 也是一个常用的句型，表示你永远也不知道 … ，其中 tell=to express in

words ，理解为描述。

本句大意：我想我永远都不能挺过来了。但直到我和 George Rainey 结婚，我才真正知道我失去了

什么。你永远无法形容一个男人是怎么样的，直到你和他住在一起 ( 才行 ) 。我从未被像 George

Rainey 这样的男人骗过。

Tiaré 到底觉得她失去了什么呢？为什么说被骗了呢？其实是说 Rainey 看起来和她的前夫差不多一

样壮，但是从来没有喝醉过、从来没有打过她，看到后面我们也知道连她出轨他都没说一句话。由

此可见她觉得 Rainey 没有 “ 男子气概 ” ，她失去的便是前夫身上的那种 “ 气概 ” 。

7.I made love with the officers of every ship that touched the island, and George Rainey never

saw anything. At last I was disgusted with him, and I got a divorce. What was the good of a

husband like that? It’s a terrible thing the way some men treat women.

8.Still, though Tiaré was old and fat, on occasion we rolled back the Brussels carpet, brought
