1.Early Polynesian culture( 早期波西尼亚文化 )

在 16 世纪末欧洲人到达之前，波西尼亚群岛的文化发展得较为独立。来自东南亚海域的原始波利尼西

亚人是一群具有很强航海技能的海上人。他们从台湾岛经菲律宾和印度尼西亚群岛，西经马里亚纳群

岛，经过连续几代的 “ 跳岛 ” ，完善了他们的航海和造船技术，终于能在整个太平洋上自由航行。

他们通过非常漫长的独木舟航行，在一些情况下迎战盛行的风浪和潮汐，殖民了以前不安定的岛屿。

3.Ah, mon cher monsieur( 亲爱的先生 ), they talk of the blessedness of labor, and it is a

meaningless phrase, but to me it has the most intense significance.

4.I do not know how I have deserved to have a wife who was the perfect friend and helpmate,

the perfect mistress and the perfect mother…“It is obvious that to lead such an existence and

make so great a success of it, you must both have needed a strong will and a determined

character.”

他在 Paumotus 买下一座岛，他和妻子在那开垦荒地，过着简单、朴实的生活，这座岛就是他的作

「 be untouched by 」这是个很好的表达，意思是对 … 不为所动。这里可以理解为没有野心。

「 due only to 」就是 only due to 文学上的表达， due to 在这里表示取决于。

「 contemplation of the work 」本义是对所做的劳动的沉思，这里应该理解为对劳动的思考有多

「 and 」连接的是 the blessedness of labor 和 it is a meaningless phrase 。就是说他们认为劳动的幸

福 (blessedness) 是句空话 .

本句大意：啊，亲爱的先生，他们说劳动是幸福的是句空话，但对于我来说劳动 (it) 有着最重要的意

义。

「 I do not…deserved 」是否定前置的用法，就是把后面从句中具有否定意味的部分，在语法上提

到了前面引导从句的动词上面。这里的言下之意是：我配不上这样的妻子。类似的例子还有 : e.g. I

do not think that he is a good husband. 大家还能想到其他「否定前置」的例子吗？

「 It is obvious that… 」是一个常用句型，意思是很明显 …

「 lead an existence 」这里的 existence= refer to someone's way of life as an existence,

especially when they live under difficult conditions ，表示生活方式；短语的意思是过着某种生活方

式。

本句大意：我想我配不上这样一个妻子：她是完美的朋友和帮手，又是贤妻良母 …“ 很明显你过着

这样的生活而且取得巨大的成功，你必须同时具有坚强的意志 (will) 和坚毅的性格。 ”

5.I shall not tell what Dr. Coutras related to me in his words, but in my own, for I cannot hope

to give at second hand any impression of his vivacious delivery.

6.He had a deep, resonant voice, fitted to his massive frame, and a keen sense of the

dramatic. To listen to him was, as the phrase goes, as good as a play; and much better than

most.

7.She told him that Ata had sent her, she who used to be at the Hôtel de la Fleur( 鲜花旅馆 ), and

that the Red One was ill.

8.His temper was certainly no better when he arrived, perspiring freely and thirsty. Ata was on

「 tell 」 =to give information by writing ，表示记述下来。

「 give at…delivery 」其中「 at second hand 」在正常的语序中应该放到句子末尾，短语的意思

是第二手的、转述的；而「 give impression of 」表示给人 … 的印象；这部分意思是：转述起来，

把任何他生动 (vivacious) 的传达的印象展现给人们。

「 the dramatic 」这里是 the+ 形容词，表示一类事物，这里是说戏剧般的东西。

「 as good as a play 」 attributed to Charles II, while listening to a debate on Lord Ross's Divorce

Bill ，是西班牙国王卡洛斯二世发明的 idiom ，意思是像看戏一样精彩。

本句大意：他的嗓音低沉、洪亮，同他魁梧的体格 (frame) 十分相称。他还对戏剧般的东西有很强烈

的感觉。听他讲话就像，如老话所说：像看戏一样精彩，甚至比大部分的戏都要好看。

「 that…and that 」这两个「 that 」后面的内容就是 She( 前文的女孩子 ) 告诉 him(Dr. Coutras.) 的两

件事，

「 she who… 」这个其实是对「 Ata 」的补充说明，即：那个曾经在鲜花旅馆待过的 Ata ；

第二个「 that 」是说 Red One 生病了，这里 Red One 是指 Strickland ，因为他的胡子是红色的。
