leprosy （麻风病）

麻风病是一个由麻风杆菌引起的一种慢性传染病（又叫 “ 汉森病 ” ），感染的病毒可能会潜伏 5 – 20 年，

而发病之后的症状包括神经、呼吸道、皮肤以及眼睛的炎症，严重的时候甚至会引起组织脱落或者畸

形。而文中 Dr. Coutras 提到的 Strickland 的五官发生病变，并且说书中叫做 Lion-faced ，就是麻风病引

起的一种症状（现代医学已证实 lion-faced 是多种疾病造成的结果），使得上颌骨增大，挤压鼻孔，并

且嘴巴变形等。

麻风病常出现在贫困地区，是一种典型的热带疾病。虽然麻风病的确会传染，但与大众普遍印象不同

的是，它并不是一个高度传染的疾病（传染途径可能是感染者的鼻涕或咳嗽）。现代普通人的身体素

质高，大部分人即使接触也不会发病，但在我们国家建国初期据统计麻风病人却超过 50 万人。起初只

能通过建立 “ 麻风村 ” 来强制隔离病人治疗，八十年代的联合化疗方案被证实安全有效，投入临床之后，

发病率已经低于十万分之一，截止到 2014 年国家疾控发表的数据显示，我国麻风病人已经不到 5000 ，

绝大部分省已经达到基本消灭。

see him, and resented the intrusion.
