西方的复古风格建筑是指文艺复兴之后，仿照古代希腊、罗马样式建造起来的房屋。在 19 世纪末、 20

世纪初，美国那些因工业发家的富豪热衷于修建仿古建筑，兴起了一股复古热潮。

汤姆的 “ 乔治王时期殖民时代的豪宅 ” （上）与

盖茨比 “ 诺曼底古堡 ” 式的华厦（下）都是这一建筑风格的反映

而出现在 Chapter11 中的宾夕法尼亚车站（未拆除重建前），其地上车站大楼直接模仿古罗马卡拉卡拉

浴场的特色，规模则接近罗马圣彼得大教堂中殿。本章介绍盖茨比豪宅室内陈设时，玛丽 · 安托万内特

式的音乐厅和王政复辟时期式样的小客厅都是这一建筑热潮背景下的产物。

复古建筑热潮在小说中是非常重要的细节。啤酒商对欧洲古典建筑近乎疯狂的推崇行为，意味着一个

出身低微的暴发户（ new money ）在心理上对旧有古典秩序（等级明确、规则严格）的认同。而满

口 “old sport” 、声称牛津大学毕业、专门托人从英国寄衣服的盖茨比不也是一个向往欧洲旧贵（ old

money ）、包装得异常精致的乡巴佬吗？所以作者借尼克之口说 “Americans, while willing, even eager,

to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry.” （美国人虽然愿意、甚至渴望当农

1.kiss-me-at-the-gate 忍冬，金银花

“kiss-me-at-the-gate” 可不是 “ 在大门口吻我 ” ，而是我们常说的金银花，学名叫忍冬，因为非常耐寒。

在英语里， kiss-me-at-the-gate 是比较通俗的叫法，而 honeysuckle 是比较正式的叫法。
