If you want to know the status of your Canadian immigration application (permanent residency, work
permit, study permit, etc) or the specific reason the Canadian immigration officer refused and denied
your application, Great Canadian Gateway can obtain this information on your behalf by accessing
your CAIPS / FOSS or GCMS notes.
CAIPS, FOSS and GCMS Files can tell you the status of an application, specific reason for refusal,
and other pertinent information regarding a Canadian immigration applicaiton.
CAIPS = ‘Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System’. This is the computer system used by
Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC). CAIPS holds all the information on the current status of
every immigration application being processed by overseas offices (i.e. those outside of Canada),
other than new applications at offices which have switched to using the ‘GCMS’ system.
FOSS is the computer system historically used by CIC offices in Canada to track all immigration-
related information, but the CAIPS system is being superceded by GCMS.
GCMS = ‘Global Case Management System’. It is a newer computer system that CIC are presently
using at their offices.
