Dear students,
I am sending this out to all of you, so those of you who are ahead of schedule and/or have been very diligent, please feel
free to disregard parts of it. Otherwise, you should probably read this carefully.
August is rapidly ending. Please do not underestimate the amount of work involved in the college application process. Many
of you approach things like SAT classes, TOEFL preparation, activities, and relaxation with far, far, far more commitment
than your essays. This is fine, but please remember that your college application does not merely consist of your test scores
and activities, and that essays don't write themselves - you still need to carve out a few hours a week to work on application
materials. There will always be other competing time commitments, which is why you need to make essays more of a priority
in your life. For some of you who are really behind (and I think you know who you are), the level of progress you've made this
summer is really bordering unacceptable.
At this point, you need to be e-mailing me a document at least once every 2 days. One document a week (or even fewer) is
not enough. There is always something else that you can be working on while you wait for me to respond to one of your
documents. If you do not know what you should/can be working on, you can just simply reach out to me (feel free to add me
on Wechat if you have not done so yet - just look for my cell phone number.)
By September 6, I expect, at minimum, completed (not in draft form):
-1 to 2 personal statements
-Activity essay - 150-300 words about a meaningful extracurricular activity and why it's significant to you
-Academic interest essay - 250-500 words about a major that you might study in college (no school research required just
yet)
-2-4 schools' supplements completed. You find the supplement topics by adding the schools into your Common Application
dashboard. You'll see that there is some overlap across some schools' supplements, but other schools will require you to
write something new. You can start with the schools that interest you the most, or you can be in touch with me to help you
pick schools.
For any essay, you are always welcome to send me a proposed outline first, before you start writing, if you feel that this will
save you some time.
Of course, it's even better if you can exceed the targets above. Otherwise, you'll have to find time to do essays amidst school
work, October SAT preparation, etc. etc.
As many of you know, I greatly, greatly dislike nagging. I shouldn't have to be doing this nagging - you're the one going to
college, not me.
Please make the next two weeks productive. If you have any questions at any time, you know how to reach me.
Michael
